The Basin/Greybull area is considered the hub of the Bighorn Basin. There are many activities to do in our immediate area, and our location is about a 60-minute drive to the most major Wyoming tourist attractions. Below is a list of some that are close to the Basin!
- Both towns have well-developed walking trails.
- Midway Golf Course is located about halfway between the two towns.
- Basin has a raw water pond that is great for fishing.
- To the east of Basin is a large area of BLM land open to ATV and off-road use. The terrain is varied and includes large hills and plenty of room to ride.
- Several towns including Basin are developing a river trail on the Bighorn River for recreational use. The Basin Boat Dock & Park is close to the campground.
- About 10 miles away, there are two reservoirs for fishing - Wardell and Harrington.
- All of Wyoming is known for rockhounding and the Basin area is no exception.
- The Big Horn Basin is rich in prehistoric attractions. With the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite about 15 miles from Greybull, Greybull also has a geoscience/dinosaur-related museum, the Bighorn Basin Geoscience Center. Worland, 40 minutes away, has the Colby Mammoth Site as well as the Washakie Museum & Cultural Center. Thermopolis, 60 minutes away, has two museums - the world-class Wyoming Dinosaur Center with several full-skeleton dinosaurs and the Hot Springs County Museum. If you are adventurous, you could take the two-hour rough road drive to the Natural Trap Cave outside of Lovell.
- Greybull was home to Hawkins and Powers aerial firefighting headquarters. The Museum of Flight & Aerial Firefighting behind the Greybull rest area has a great display of planes.
- About 20 minutes away is a badland area called Devil’s Kitchen. It is an interesting section of Badlands.
- Near Hyattville, about an hour away, is a fantastic set of petroglyphs at Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site.
- Cody, Wyoming, about 60 minutes away, is a gateway to Yellowstone Park which is another hour from Cody. During the summer, Cody is a lively place, but there is always plenty going on in all seasons of the year - lots of restaurants, shopping, and even quite a bit of live music. The big attractions in Cody are the Cody Nite Rodeo that happens every single night between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and the Buffalo Bill Center of the West. With five museums under one roof, the Cody Firearms Museum has one of the largest firearm collections in the nation. There is a large art museum - Whitney Western Art Museum, the Buffalo Bill Museum, the Plains Indian Museum, and the Draper Natural History Museum. Cody also has a museum that we find extremely interesting. The Cody Dug Up Gun Museum has hundreds of lost guns that were found years later. The Historic Cody Mural and Museum has a fantastic mural display and history of the LDS church. One of the prettiest drives in the state is going up the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway through Sunlight Basin and returning to Red Lodge, Montana on the Beartooth Highway.
- We have two wild horse ranges within an hour’s drive. One is the McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Range and the other is the Pryor Mountains Wild Horse Range.
- During World War II, Wyoming was home to the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp. The Heart Mountain Japanese-American WWII Internment Camp and the Heart Mountain Relocation Center are located between Cody and Powell, about 70 minutes from Basin.
- We sit in the shadows of the Bighorn Mountain Range where there are lakes, mountain trails, and wilderness to explore.
- The Bighorn Canyon National Recreational Area is about 60 minutes away. It is a large canyon with sheer 800-foot cliffs descending to the Bighorn River at the bottom of the canyon - great for boating, recreation, and fishing. If you do not have a boat, the drive through the recreational area is just as phenomenal. There is a wild horse range and the historic Hillsboro Ranch that is about a one-mile hike from the parking area. The views are stunning, and it is an easy day trip.
- The Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark in the Bighorns is about a 45-minute drive from the Bighorn Canyon National Recreational Area. The drive up Highway 14A is a beautiful drive up a steep road up the side of the mountain. The Medicine Wheel itself is about a ¾-mile walk from the parking area.
- About an hour’s drive up the Greybull River Road is the small town of Meeteetse, Wyoming. The drive is beautiful with lots of opportunities to see wildlife including elk. The Upper and Lower Sunshine Reservoirs are a wonderful place to fish - stocked with 12 to 15-inch trout in a beautiful mountain setting.
- About an hour south is the town of Thermopolis, Wyoming. Hot Springs State Park is the world's largest hot springs - with free soaking pools, two water parks, and a nice walking trail complete with a swinging bridge. The Hot Springs County Museum features the Hole in the Wall Bar where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid drank. They also have boat and tube rental places for floating the Bighorn River. A cool little store called Merlin’s Hideout has apparel and all kinds of fur items for sale, from Buffalo hides, skunks, foxes, coyotes, etc. Boysen Reservoir is just south of Thermopolis and is a great fishery and an area for boating recreation.
- And much, much more!
