Basin and Greybull are considered the hub of the Bighorn Basin. There are lots of activities to do in our immediate area and our location is about a 60-minute drive to the most major Wyoming tourist attractions. Below is a list of some that are close to the Basin!
- Both towns have a very well developed walking trail.
- There is a golf course about halfway between the towns
- Basin has a raw water pond that is great for fishing.
- To the east of Basin is a very large area of BLM land that is open to ATV and off-road use. Lots of varied terrain to include large hills and lots of room to ride.
- Several of the towns including Basin are developing a river trail on the Bighorn River for recreational use. There is a boat dock right close to the campground.
- About 10 mi away we have two lakes for fishing. Wardell and Harrington.
- All of Wyoming is known for rockhounding and the Basin area is no exception.
- The Big Horn Basin is rich in prehistoric attractions. There is a dinosaur track site about 15 miles from Greybull. Greybull also has a geoscience dinosaur related museum. Worland 40 minutes away has a mammoth kill site and also a nice County Museum. Thermopolis 60 minutes away has a world-class dinosaur museum with several full skeleton dinosaurs. If you’re really adventurous You could take the approximately 2-hour rough road drive to the natural trap outside of Lovell.
- Greybull was home to Hawkins and Powers air firefighting headquarters. They have a museum with planes highlighting aerial firefighting.
- About 20 minutes away is a badland area called Devil’s Kitchen. It is a very interesting section of Badlands.
- Near Hyattville about an hour away is a fantastic set of petroglyphs at Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site.
- Cody, Wyoming, about 60 minutes away, is a gateway City to Yellowstone Park which is another hour from Cody. During the summer, Cody is a very lively place, but there is always a lot going on all seasons of the year. Lots of restaurants, shopping and even quite a bit of live music. The big attractions in Cody are the night rodeo that happens every single night between memorial Day and Labor Day and the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum. Five museums under one roof, they have one of the largest firearm collections in the nation, a large art museum, the Buffalo Bill Museum, a native American Museum, and a natural history museum. Cody also has a museum that I find extremely interesting , the Dug Up Gun Museum with hundreds of lost guns found years later. The LDS church also has a fantastic mural display. And probably one of the prettiest drives in the state is going up the chief Joseph (Sunlight Basin) highway and coming back down the Beartooth Highway into Red Lodge, Montana.
- We have two wild horse ranges within an hour’s drive. One is McCullough Peaks and the other is Pryor Mountain Horse Range.
- During World War II, Wyoming was home to the Heart Mountain Relocation Camp. They have a wonderful Japanese internment camp museum located between Cody and Powell about 70 minutes from Basin.
- We sit in the shadows of the Bighorn Mountain Range. There are lots of lakes and mountain trails and wilderness to explore.
- Bighorn Canyon Recreational area is about 60 minutes away. It is a large canyon with sheer 800 foot cliffs descending to the Bighorn River sitting at the bottom of the canyon. Great for boating, recreation and fishing. If you don’t have a boat the drive through the recreational area is just as phenomenal. There is a wild horse range, a small ghost town called Hillsboro is about a 1 mi hike from a parking area. The views are stunning and it is an easy day trip.
- The Medicine Wheel in the Bighorns is about a 45-minute drive from Bighorn Canyon Recreational Area. The drive up highway 14A is a beautiful drive up a steep road up the side of the mountain. The medicine wheel itself is about a 3/4 mile walk from the parking area.
- About an hour’s drive up the Greybull River road is the small town of Meeteese. The drive is a beautiful drive with lots of opportunity to see wildlife including elk. Sunshine Reservoir is a great place to fish. Stocked with 12 to 15 inch trout in a beautiful mountain setting.
- About an hour South, is the town of Thermopolis. It has the world’s largest hot springs. Free soaking pools, two water park Hot Springs pools and a very nice walking trail complete with a swinging bridge. Also, Thermopolis has a fantastic county Museum complete with the Hole in the Wall Bar where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid actually drank. They’ve also got some boat and tube rental places for floating the Bighorn River. A cool little store called Merlin’s Hideout that has all kinds of fur items for sale, from Buffalo hides, skunk, fox, coyote, ect and apparel. Boysen Reservoir, a very large reservoir, is just south of Thermopolis and is a great fishery and also area for boating recreation.
- And much, much more!
